After a traffic accident you should:

Not move the vehicles before the police arrive, unless they pose a traffic hazard.

Give a complete statement to the police about how the accident happened and your injuries.

Exchange information with the other driver including: name, address, driver's license number, vehicle license plate number and insurance information.

Get the names, addresses and phone number of any witnesses.

Take pictures of the damage, best with a 35mm camera, to both automobiles and of any noticeable cuts or bruises to your body.

Get medical treatment for your injuries immediately. Your Oregon auto insurance covers some of your medical expenses regardless of fault.

Contact your insurance company and provide all the information you have about the other driver.

File an accident report within 72 hours of the accident.
|

If you are the victim of a hit-and-run accident, report it to the police within 72 hours.

Do not give a statement to the other driver's insurance company representative about the facts of the accident or your injuries. Ask for the representative's name, phone number and claim number and give this information to your lawyer.

Do not sign a release of information form for the other driver's insurance company. Let your lawyer provide necessary information to the other driver's insurance company.

Get a written estimate of the damage to your vehicle from a reputable auto body shop that you select.
|
| • |
Faithfully attend all medical appointments and follow the course of treatment recommended by your doctor.

Keep a list of the medical providers who treat you for accident-related injuries.
|
| • |
Keep an injury diary to record your pain, discomfort and how your injuries have affected your lifestyle.
